I love your choice of words and your descriptions. Definitely brings it all home! I think I subscribed but if that is the last missive I get from you I will have to ask for technical help! I just got back from NYC and because of my face plant did not find time to see pascal
Hey Ruth, it's Alasdair. I've been reading your posts on Facebook for a while now and only just realised there's a substack attached!
We visited Thailand and Cambodia on our honeymoon in 2014. A very different style of trip (fancy hotels and pre-booked transfers) but I was completely bowled over by Siem Reap and Ankhor Wat too. Our guide/fixer was also a teacher, as well as a political activist, and we spent most of the three days talking about the very challenging state of affairs for the population of Cambodia. A little glimpse into how ignorant of things we can be.
I'm subscribed now, and looking forward to future posts! Looking forward to catching up next month.
What a brilliant collection of experiences captured in your e-journal. Thank you for sharing. I could almost smell and see the cramped alleys with its food markets. Such a vivid memory you have and I was taken back to my own gap “yaar” month all those years ago. Bravo Ruth x
PS. Yep. You are a writer! (Should I translate Yep for non-Yankees?)

Ahh Alasdair
So delighted to have you along.
The thing I most enjoyed about my trip was our guides views into real life, outside of tourism (well, a bit I think). It’s one thing to go as a
Tourist. Another to glimpse real life.
Aside from the magnificent of Angkor Wat… extraordinary.
See you next month!

Sounds like a great trip! Did you come back making plans for the next one??
🤣 good question Amanda! Not quite but I have a few ideas bubbling…hope you are well x
Beautiful words, Ruth! I’m so pleased you’ve had such a magical adventure.
Thank you Kiarna, I sure did :-)

Thanks Asma! I always recall that market you took me to in KL and seeing that tank of massive live eels…stood me in good steed for SEA :-) x
Welcome back! I missed you. Thanks for the inspiration to travel further afield x
I’ve missed you too! Thanks Sharon, do it! You would absolutely love it x
