I'm guilty of mental accounting for sure - this month everything counts as 'it's my birthday' 🤑. But also the framing and anchoring - especially for things I have no idea what they cost. Until I go to the shop and get the spiel and then something that would have seemed outrageous before suddenly feels like a bargain!
Such fun! What did you buy? When I last bought a warm coat (not including skiing) I bought a Barbour International black ‘duvet’ that covers my backside. So much warmer! Xx
My money is on that you went back and purchased the first one, the Canada Goose one as once you try one of those on, you never look back and nothing will compare to the quality and you are a quality girl Sturks!
A very interesting conundrum Ruth. I’m not sure how long our planet will sustain our fashion dilemmas and if I really think about it our questions should be -cost per wear, sustainability and ethical production over and above -the right label, current fashion season etc. Personally, I don’t but new clothes much now having found Vinted so that’s a be of recycling but your post has made me realise I need to think long and hard over any new/expensive purchases 😀
Enjoy swishing around Boston ( it may be worth waiting til you get there to buy!) x
Great points Jan. There is definitely something not right about over consumption which includes fast fashion (and indeed Big Food, another bug bear of mine). I need to discover Vinted, having heard many good things about it.
Thanks re Boston! It should be fun, as well as chilly! x
It all comes down to your functional and non-functional requirements and prioritising those requirements. You are in a fortunate position that budget is not an issue so don't get let the cost skew your decision in this case. Go back to what you really need it for, what you want, and look at the benefits of each. It is about value not cost. Does it meet all your requirements and is it value for money. You will look gorgeous in any of them Sturks!
Great tips Bill. You make an interesting point about budget however, I remember observing in my financial planning clients the dilemma around cost v (perception) of value. It's hard to change long held views and values. But I agree, worth working on.
And thanks for your lovely comment my friend :-) x
You forgot Icebreaker out of New Zealand. Soft merino wool stylish and expensive unless you go to the outlet store which we have in Portland. Also Stio from Jackson zHole Wyoming. Modestly puffy, so soft and warm and can be stuffed into a small pocket for travel. Patagonia: recycled and environmentally conscious. Really the best for outdoor sports is on the west coast. Come and visit!
Hi ! I know what you mean when It come to fashion and winter coat …. I gave up my sense of style a while back when the temperature ended up in the -20 Celsius with a windshield below that .
I am now a big fan of coats from Uniqlo I like their prices and the lightness of their coat .. in the winter i use to put too many layers and couldn’t move or felt like the Michelin man ….the truth is if anyone open my coat closet you will be surprised to see coats from 15 years and maybe more …. I have a large collection … going from wool… to fake fur to heavy 3/4 ski jacket and more …so there
I have other coat just in case I have to dress up for a special occasion.. but it is a bit rare lately …
I will say just bet on light and warm …. It simplify life ……. And keep the one you like just in case ……
🤣 so know what you mean Pascale. I hadn’t thought of Uniqlo but I hear good things. I know NYC is brisk in the winter…I recall being there in Jan/Feb 1994 and it was soooo cold the Hudson was frozen 🥶 It was beautiful to see mind.
Yea I’m sure my faux 1989 fur will come back in one day!

It’s so human how we backfill and justify to reach the conclusion that works for us isn’t it Faith. In many other areas other than shopping!
And it’s my birthday too this month, as if I need a reason to treat myself…😘
Ha ha oh you should! Happy birthday when it comes 🥳
Thanks, and backatcha :-)

Ahhh a backside covering Barbour sounds perfect!
I bought a Patagonia in the end. Covers all my bases ! Have a great weekend Sharon x

Hi Ruth
For expensive purchases, I use the £1 a day / wear / use model.
So if you really like a coat but the price is a key consideration; think will I wear this say 300 times and value it at £300.
That said my last two coats (over the past 5 years) have been Xmas gifts from Claire....
I like the idea of having a price a day/wear model Simon - it allows some tangibility. Albeit at £1 a day that's quite a long ROI potentially :-).
As for gifts, i think we need a new rule ! LOL

I love Ice Breaker Mary, durable, warm and non smelly! perfect.
Sounds like you have just given me another reason to come to the West Coast Mary :-)
