Firstly great that you are having the conversation Jayne! money is often a taboo subject which lots of negative connotations for some.
You are right when you speak of finding a balance. Many of us have difficulty in imagining our future self so ignore the need to look after our older self...There is no straight forward answer to the correct balance or amount to invest for the future as we all have different circumstances but making a monthly amount part of your core expenditure is a good discipline for sure.
